Alicante novelties on the Parker list

Fondillón Luis XIV and the wines of Pepe Mendoza, winners of this stroll through the Mediterranean.

A new article from Robert Parker´s “The Wine Advocate” puts Alicante back on the map of the great wines of the world. This time, with the tasting of references and a wide range of varieties, elaborations and new wineries.

The most valued wine on this occasion is once again a Fondillón. At 95 points, “Luis XIV” from the Collection of Centennial Toneles recently adapted in La Cañada (Vinalopó Alto) directly enters this top position. Its tasting highlights that it is “extraordinary and long.”

Along with him, the Mendoza range crowns the entire article “Spain: Central and Mediterranean Spain – Time to Get Excited About Arcos, Giró and Othter Local Grape Varieties”. With his wines “El Veneno” but also with his “Estrecho” and “Las Quebradas” (all from 2018) he gets 94+ and 94 points, which is something truly outstanding. It is followed by “Santa Rosa” with 93+ points and “Giró de Abargues” with 93 points. And, both the wines of his most personal project “Casa Agrícola” and those of the classic Enrique Mendoza are awarded with 92 points . But what is remarkable is the ecstasy that the wines from the Valle del Pop winery have caused with varieties such as Giró or “Arcos” (soon to be incorporated as DOP Alicante) and which gives the article its title.

These wines are followed by a classic such as “El Sequé 2017” with 92 points. Also, the references that Vinessens have incorporated at the same level as “Salicornio 2019” and “El Vivero 2019” with 92 points, “Tintorera” with 91+ points, “Peligrés 2019” and “Tragolargo 2019″ with 91 points, the ” La Casica del Abuelo 2019 ” with 90 points from the winery in Villena.

As a novelty this year, the “Aida i Luis” winery located in Xaló stands out, reaching 91 points with “Maboi 2018” and “Ou yea 2019” and 90 points with “Tahúlla”.

Other wineries that have emerged as references are Vins del Comtat, (“1921 Monastrell” with 93 points, “Mont Cabrer” with 92 points and “El Salze” with 91 points) and Sierra Salinas (“Mira Salinas” with 90+ points).
