The OIV supports the International Congress on the Monastrell Grape
The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV, for its initials in Spanish), an important technical and scientific organisation in the wine sector, has shown its support and satisfaction for the celebration of the 1st International Congress on the Monastrell grape on 12 November in Alicante. They have also congratulated the organisers of this ambitious meeting as it is “a great initiative”.
For the president of the PDO Vinos Alicante, Antonio Miguel Navarro, this stance represents significant support for the Congress, in which leading personalities from the world of wine coincide, both at a national and international level. The aim is to highlight one of the greatest Spanish varietals, used to produce unique and powerful wines, as well as to emphasise the growing interest it creates among younger generations, both in wine experts and consumers.
It is worth mentioning that the OIV was founded in 1924 by six producer States in response to the global wine producing crisis. Since then, it has developed and adapted itself to become, especially from 2001 onwards, the key organisation in this sector. Its 46 member States represent more than 85% of the world’s production of wine and almost 80% of its consumption worldwide. Moreover, ten international non-governmental organisations also take part as observers.
Monastrell is a unique grape, adapted to Mediterranean features, as it can be out in the sun for many hours and grow in poor soils without any problems. It can even overripen on the vine to produce liqueur wines or Fondillón, a unique, tasty and elegant liqueur wine, extremely complex to produce, and one of the greatest wines in the world.
With this International Congress, for the first time in history, the Regions of Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, California and Australia join forces to promote a 100% Spanish and Mediterranean wine varietal: the Monastrell.
