Exceptional winetastings at the conference “Alicante, historic wine capital of the Mediterranean”
26 Sep 2025 Exceptional winetastings at the conference “Alicante, historic wine capital of the Mediterranean”
Vinos Alicante DOP will explore the past, present, and future of Mediterranean wines through three spectacular tastings.
Booking for these tastings, which will take place from October 29th to 31st in Alicante, as part of the International Congress “Alicante, Historic Capital of Mediterranean Wine,” is now available on the Vinos Alicante DOP website.
The three tastings, which will take place in iconic venues throughout the city, will be led by such prominent figures as writer and influencer Sarah Jane Evans MW; Pedro Ballesteros MW, the first Spaniard to achieve the title of Master of Wine; Beth Willard, a taster from Tim Atkin’s team; and prestigious sommeliers María José Huertas and Ferran Centelles.
The Congress includes a full program of presentations at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, as well as other parallel activities, including tastings organized by Vinos Alicante DOP.
In parallel with the comprehensive presentations that will take place at the Alicante Archaeological Museum (MARQ) during the International Conference “Alicante, Historic Capital of Mediterranean Wine,” Vinos Alicante DOP is committed to contextualizing the vital influence of wine on Mediterranean culture through three highly exclusive tastings that explore the past, present, and future history of Mediterranean wine.
The first of the tastings, which will take place on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m., is titled Tasting History and will feature Sarah Jane Evans MW, contributing editor of Decanter magazine and co-chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards for 17 years, as the exceptional master of ceremonies. Santa Bárbara Castle will be the perfect setting for the charismatic writer and influencer to explore the most classic and well-known wines and varieties of the Mare Nostrum.
The following day, Thursday, October 30th, at 7:00 PM, Casa Mediterráneo will host a very special wine tasting: Young People with History. Led by two highly experienced and promising professionals, María José Huertas (sommelier at the Casino de Madrid) and Beth Willard (collaborator of Tim Atkin MW and judge at the Decanter World Wine Awards), they will take a team tour of wines that are the result of ancient productions, varieties that are being revived, or that embrace forgotten traditions; winemaking methods that serve as a starting point and reference for creating new Mediterranean wine profiles. Wines from Istria, Croatia, Sicily, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Crete, Mallorca, Cava, Penedés, and Alicante will be available for tasting.
In Fondillón Veritas will be the closing tasting of the seminar, on Friday, October 31st at 5:00 PM, and will take place in a privileged location: the Cloister of the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás. Led by the first Spaniard to achieve the title of Master of Wine, Pedro Ballesteros MW, and sommelier Ferran Centelles (Drinks Manager of the elBullifoundation), this is a tasting tribute to Fondillón, a magical wine that epitomizes the identity of Alicante: tradition, longevity, character, authenticity, and that mystical aura that has made the experience of tasting a fondillón something almost sacred.
Vinos Alicante DOP has put tickets for these exclusive tastings, with very limited capacity, on sale through a pop-up on its website at €40 per person. Reservations can be made here.
