12 Mar 2021 Jancis Robinson praises the “revival” of muscat in the Marina Alta
The prestigious English journalist Jancis Robinson has just published an article on Alicante DOP Wines from the Marina Alta region. The author, Ferran Centelles, who visited the area recently, has tasted a total of 26 references from the area that generally obtain an outstanding score.
The article highlights the “historical, social and economic importance” of the variety and the differences between some clones, or the contrasts found with the “Roman Muscat” or the “Malaga Muscat“. It also focuses on the expressive capacity of this variety with the common denominator of “lemon verbena” flavor.
Casa Agrícola obtains the best results with its “Macabeo / Merseguera 2019”, its “Giró Abargues” or its “Moscatel / Macabeo / Airén”. But also “Les Freses 2018” or “Renaix la Passió 2019” by Bodegas Riko, the dry muscatel by Aida i Luis or those by Joan de la Casa also stand out.
The tasting also includes sweet wines such as “Crista-li” from Vins del Comtat,” “Bahía de Denia 2019” from Xaló, “Finca Collado 2018” or “Marina Alta” from Bocopa.
The article titled “Alicante and Moscatel revived“, available under subscription on its website, joins other important figures who have highlighted the differential values of this region and the variety such as Guía Peñin, Tim Atkin and Robert Parker among others, which makes it a very powerful focus of interest right now.
